Thomas A. Grant, 16, schoolboy, helped to save Nick Zatezalo, 15, schoolboy, from drowning, Manor, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1965. While attempting to swim across a reservoir, Zatezalo played out 75 feet from the bank and called for help. Grant and Harry H. McAllister Jr., swam 35 five feet to where Zatezalo by then had sunk in water 12 feet deep. Submerging, Grant saw Zatezalo and took him to the surface. Zatezalo tried to climb onto Grant, who freed himself by submerging briefly. McAllister and Grant took hold of Zatezalo, and his struggles caused all three to be submerged. Grant and McAllister surfaced. When Zatezalo did not appear, Grant dived to the bottom but could not find him because of the muddy water. On his second dive he located Zatezalo. Grant started to surface holding the hair of Zatezalo, who continued to struggle. McAllister then dived, took hold of Zatezalo, and aided Grant in taking him to the surface. McAllister supported Zatezalo, while Grant swam 50 feet to a rowboat. Zatezalo began struggling with McAllister as Grant towed the boat to them. Another youth arrived. Using the boat, Grant, McAllister, and the youth took Zatezalo to the bank.
