Thelma M. Littlefield, 48, housewife, rescued Addie G. Bean, 64, from burning, Murphysboro, Illinois, February 10, 1950. Miss Bean while shoveling hot coals from a furnace in the basement of her home accidentally ignited the back of her dress. Screaming for help, she ran from the basement and quickly ascended an outside stairway as the flames enveloped the back of her dress and spread to the front. Mrs. Littlefield, who lived next door, ran 12 feet to Miss Bean and tore away a portion of the latter’s dress at the neck. Whirling about at the head of the stairway, Miss Bean grasped one of Mrs. Littlefield’s wrists and held tightly to it. Mrs. Littlefield, repeatedly tearing away burning portions of the dress with her free hand, drew Miss Bean 10 feet from the stairway. The flames consumed Miss Bean’s stockings and ignited her undergarments. Mrs. Littlefield quickly removed the rest of Miss Bean’s clothing, and Miss Bean released Mrs. Littlefield.
