Thad E. Green, 24, student, died saving Sterling T. Turner, Sr., 59, farmer, from suffocation in a well, Taylors, South Carolina, July 31, 1947. While being hoisted on a windlass rope in a well 50 feet deep, Turner was overcome by gas and fell in water four feet deep. Green, who knew sulphur had been burned in the well, descended the rope hand under hand. Two minutes later, Green, who could not be seen by men at the windlass, called that Turner was tied and should be drawn up alone because his condition was serious. Turner was raised by means of the rope and removed from the well. The rope was again lowered, but Green called that he could not find it. He was not heard from thereafter. Forty-five minutes later a man was lowered with a rope securely tied to him. He tied Green, who was under water, to him with another rope, and both were drawn to the top. Green was drowned. Turner was revived and recovered. 41139-3531
