T. William Hutchins, 26, clerk, died as the result of attempting to save Leila de Llorens, 21, from drowning, Ship Island, Mississippi, July 17, 1910. Hutchins, who had been ill for two weeks, swam to Mrs. de Llorens, who had been caught by the undertow in the Gulf of Mexico, 500 feet from the beach, where the waves were five feet high. She clasped him and struggled, taking him under the surface several times. Hutchins screamed for help. He freed himself but was unable to find Mrs. de Llorens afterward, and she drowned. He was rescued by two men. Within 30 minutes after being rescued, Hutchins developed a high fever and became delirious. Pneumonia set in, and he died six days later. 6998-673
