Steven Lee Boggs died attempting to save Robert A. Ozzello from drowning, Wakefield, Michigan, May 16, 1976. Robert, 11, was on Sunday Lake in a small boat when the craft swamped, putting him into deep water about 200 feet from the bank. Unable to swim, he floundered and called for help. Boggs, 18, apprentice automobile mechanic, removed his shoes and swam to Robert, who then submerged. Boggs brought Robert to the surface and began towing him toward the bank. There was a lot of splashing; and both Boggs and Robert went under. They surfaced; and Robert again submerged but was brought to the surface by Boggs. Following more splashing, Robert and Boggs sank and drowned.
