Stanley M. Mitchell died after attempting to rescue Chantal Vaillancourt and her two children from burning, Oshawa, Ontario, February 14, 1978. At night fire broke out in the living room of a one-story frame dwelling occupied by Mrs. Vaillancourt, 20, and her two small daughters. Mitchell, 50, entered the house via the front door and in the kitchen was met by Mrs. Vaillancourt, who was very groggy. She got the children from a bedroom while Mitchell tried in vain to open the back door as flames spread into the kitchen and heat and smoke increased. Mitchell broke the kitchen window. The back door then swung open. Mrs. Vaillancourt fled with the children; but Mitchell did not emerge from the dwelling. When firemen had put out the flames they found Mitchell on the kitchen floor. Mrs. Vaillancourt and the two children were treated for burns and recovered. Mitchell succumbed two days later.
