Simon Ernest Leopold, 14, schoolboy, attempted to save Maurice Fushan, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, June 17, 1919. While bathing in the Allegheny River, Maurice stepped into a channel, in which the water was 20 feet deep. He struggled and sank once or twice. From a ledge around a pier, Ernest dived and swam 15 feet to Maurice, who grasped him with one arm around his neck. Both sank, and Maurice got on Ernest’s shoulders. Ernest freed himself and rose to the surface, but Maurice did not rise, and Ernest swam back to the pier, having swallowed much water. Maurice was drowned. 19640-1646
