Sidney W. Hoffman, 39, civil engineer, died attempting to save Dorothy C. Austin, 8, from drowning, Seaside, Oregon, August 16, 1922. Dorothy lost her footing in wadable water 100 feet from shore in the Pacific Ocean, and she was carried farther from shore by a strong current as she swam to keep afloat. Hoffman entered the water and waded toward Dorothy, but he was carried to a point about 250 feet from shore, where he called for help. Meanwhile, Dorothy was rescued 200 feet from shore by a lifeguard. The guard, wearing a lifebelt to which was attached a line that was held by men on and near shore, then swam to Hoffman and took him to wadable water, but Hoffman died before he reached shore. 2909-1880
