Sidney S. Harris died helping to save Robert C. Cassady from suffocation, Cainsville, Ontario, July 17, 1968. Cassady, 53, tank cleaner, entered an underground oil storage tank to begin the work of removing sludge which had remained after the oil had been removed. Although he was wearing a filter-type mask, he was overcome by a deficiency of oxygen and fell unconscious in the sludge. Harris, 21, tank cleaner, the only other person at the immediate scene, ran to the nearest building and reported the situation to workmen there. Five of them returned to the tank with Harris, who then put on a mask, entered the tank, and tied a rope around Cassady. The other men pulled Cassady from the tank. Before he could climb out, Harris also was overcome and fell unconscious in the sludge. He later was removed by a fire department rescue squad, but he succumbed about 15 hours after being taken to a hospital. Cassady recovered.
