Seymour J. Leighton died attempting to save Mary G. Kane and Evelyn Bliss from drowning, Lawrence, Massachusetts, July 4, 1904. While wading toward Mary, 16, and Evelyn, 14, who had drifted over the falls in the Merrimac River, Leighton, 41, machinist, was carried away by the swift current, and all three perished.
