Seth Kozak

Seth Kozak rescued a boy and attempted to rescue Nate Davenport from electrocution, Jupiter, Florida, October 22, 2023. Kozak’s son, 10, was in a shallow outdoor fountain when he was electrocuted and suddenly fell. Authorities later determined that electric current was leaking from light fixtures in the fountain. While Kozak’s son was unresponsive in the water, Davenport’s son and daughter, both 8, were also playing in the water and able to exit the fountain. They ran to an outdoor seating area overlooking the fountain to alert their father, Davenport, and Kozak that the boy needed help. Davenport ran to the fountain, arriving ahead of Kozak, and jumped into the water, where he was immediately shocked and fell unresponsive beside the boy. Entering the fountain next, Kozak, 49, sales representative, also was shocked and then became immobilized on his knees in the water as he attempted to aid his son and Davenport. Unable to climb out of the fountain, Kozak called for help. Standing on the splash pad outside the fountain, Davenport’s 8-year-old son then grasped Kozak’s arm, receiving a shock before helping Kozak move his legs out of the fountain and onto the ledge. As he lay chest down there, Kozak again was shocked as he grasped his son and, ultimately, pulled his son from the fountain to the ground, where Kozak began CPR. As he became aware that Davenport remained in the fountain, Kozak returned to the ledge, lay chest down, and reached for Davenport, enduring additional shocks as he tried to pull his heavier friend out. Others joined Kozak, helping to pull Davenport from the water around the time a bystander shut off the power to the fountain. Arriving first-responders tended to Kozak’s son, who was revived at the scene. The boy then was taken to a hospital, as were Davenport’s 8-year-old son and his 11-year-old brother, who later recovered from electrocution injuries. Davenport died of electrocution. Kozak’s son remained in the hospital for two days, with Kozak also receiving treatment for his extended exposure to the electrified water before both were released.
