Scott Bradbury Koffinke saved Robert J. Haddad II and Thomas W. Kelly from burning, Quincy, Massachusetts, August 13, 1995. Haddad, 23, was the driver of an automobile which, in a highway accident, rolled onto its passenger side and caught fire. Kelly, 24, was his passenger. Another motorist, Koffinke, 26, construction worker, drove upon the scene and stopped. With flames issuing from the engine area of the wrecked car, Koffinke broke out its back window, partially entered the car, and pulled Haddad out, then dragged him away. Informed that Kelly was inside, Koffinke returned to the burning car and again entered through the back window. He maneuvered to Kelly, who, unconscious, lay in the front of the car. Faced with increasing smoke and heat inside the car and spreading flames outside, Koffinke grasped Kelly and maneuvered him out of the car through the back window. The car was shortly engulfed by flame and was destroyed. Haddad and Kelly were hospitalized for treatment of injuries incurred during the accident, and they recovered. Koffinke received hospital treatment for cuts to his knees, which required suturing, and he recovered.
