Schuyler W. Hammer, 40, painter, died attempting to save John R. Hayhurst, 45, grocer, and Glen A. Randall, 26, contractor, from drowning, Claude, Texas, January 13, 1924. (See case of GLEN A. RANDALL.) Just after Randall broke through, Hammer, although other men begged him not to go, lay on a long board and crawled from shore over the ice toward the two men, as the ice cracked and bent under him. Hayhurst meanwhile sank, and Hammer broke through within 300 feet of Randall. He supported himself by holding to the board until he became numb and finally sank and was drowned. 23954-1953
