Sarah Ann Leach, 29, stenographer, saved Catherine B. Cleary, 16, from drowning, Rome City, Indiana, August 16, 1917. Catherine was swimming in Sylvan Lake and was seized with cramp 40 feet from shore in water over her depth. Miss Leach swam 20 feet to her, grasped her hand, and swam five feet with her toward shore. Miss Leach’s sister, who could not swim, floundered toward them from wadable water, caught hold of Miss Leach’s skirt, but lost her hold and went under the surface. Miss Leach grasped her with her free hand and floated, supporting her and Catherine for several minutes. An expert swimmer then reached them and towed them to wadable water. Miss Leach was very tired, and her sister and Catherine were unconscious, but they revived. 20661-1589
