Samuel Edwin Katcha died after attempting to save James J. Teul from drowning, Cudahy, Wisconsin, January 17, 1978. While standing on an ice shelf along the shore of Lake Michigan, James, 12, slipped and fell into deep water, where he was raised and lowered by wind-driven waves. Samuel, 13, schoolboy, went to the edge of the shelf and extended one foot toward James. A wave broke over the ice, causing Samuel to lose his footing and fall into the water. James was washed to the shelf, and several boys lying on it pulled him from the water. A wave moved Samuel toward the shelf also, but he was washed under it and drowned. 56097-6329
