Samuel A. Johnson, 29, saved James J. Houlihan, 46, and attempted to save Michael Muldoon, 40, and Peter J. Collins, 54, from suffocation, New York, New York, August 14, 1908. Muldoon was overcome by gas at the bottom of a 16-foot manhole. Houlihan and Collins went to his rescue but were themselves overcome. Johnson then descended, protected only by a handkerchief tied over his nose, and tied a rope around Houlihan, who was pulled out. While lifting one of the other men, Johnson felt himself weakening, and he started up the ladder for fresh air. He was caught by men at the top just as he was about to fall back. He later suffered two epileptic seizures. 2874-242
