Russell W. Engledove, 36, laborer, died saving Henry T. Nelson, 45, laborer, from suffocation, Paris, Texas, October 29, 1914. Nelson descended through a manhole 18 inches square to the bottom of a fermenting tank 18 feet deep and was almost immediately overcome by gas. Although others seemed unwilling to enter, Engledove, with a wet cloth over his face, descended by a ladder and fastened a rope around Nelson. He returned to the ladder, but before he could climb it, he fell unconscious. Nelson was pulled out and recovered. Engledove was dead when he was taken out 30 minutes later. 15433-1186
