Roy D. Grover, 12, schoolboy, died attempting to save Geraldine C. Dama, 12, from drowning, Park Falls, Wisconsin, June 28, 1943. Geraldine fell from a low foot-bridge into the North Fork of the Flambeau River and drifted in a current of two m.p.h. in water 10 feet deep 80 feet from the bank. Roy removed some of his clothing, dived from the bridge, and swam 100 feet to Geraldine. They took hold of each other and were submerged briefly. They drifted 25 feet and then became separated as Roy sank. Roy’s older brother, who was summoned, swam to Geraldine, who was nearly unconscious, and took her to the bank. She revived, but Roy was drowned. 39909-3341
