Roland J. Gauvin saved Joseph G. Bolduc from drowning, Moody, Maine, August 26, 1945. While bathing in rough surf in the Atlantic Ocean, Bolduc, 49, shoemaker, who was an excellent swimmer, was carried seaward by a strong undercurrent through breakers six feet high, was repeatedly swept out as he tried to swim in, and called for help. Gauvin, 29, draftsman, on three attempts to wade beyond the nearest line of breakers was swept back toward shore. Diving through the breaker line, Gauvin swam with difficulty through three other lines to Bolduc, who placed his arms around Gauvin’s neck. Forcibly freeing himself, Gauvin got an arm across Bolduc’s chest and swam towing him with great effort, being buffeted by breakers and swallowing water, 135 feet to where he got footing. Bolduc was carried to shore by two men, and Gauvin waded in. Bolduc was semiconscious and ill but recovered. Gauvin was nearly exhausted. 41254-3563
