Roger Dale Jackson saved Frank G. Trotter from being struck by a train, Joanna, South Carolina, February 12, 1988. Trotter, 21, was unconscious in the driver’s seat of his pickup truck, which had left the highway and was straddling a railroad track. Driving on the same highway, Roger, 16, high school student, stopped and ran to the truck. Warned by another motorist that a freight train was approaching, Roger leaned into the truck to his waist and grasped Trotter. The train, traveling at 45 m.p.h., appeared around a bend and, although its emergency brakes were applied, was unable to stop before reaching the scene. Just seconds after Roger pulled Trotter out of the truck and rolled with him into a ditch, the train crashed into the truck, demolishing it.
