Robert S. Hehnly, 11, schoolboy, saved Bobby E. Knight, 6, from drowning, Brunswick, Georgia, August 9, 1949. Bobby fell from a rowboat on the East River and was submerged 35 feet from the bank in water 5.5 deep. Robert, who had been paddling the rowboat and could swim only 50 feet, dived from the boat and swam under water to Bobby, who grasped him at the shoulders. Robert took hold of Bobby’s waist, and they rose near a rope that extended a foot above the water between a fishing boat and a piling. Robert towed Bobby to the rope, and Bobby took hold of it. As Robert began to swim toward the rowboat, which had drifted 20 feet from them, Bobby lost his hold and started to sink. Robert returned to him and helped him regain his hold. Robert then swam to the rowboat and climbed into it. He paddled to Bobby, lifted him into the boat, and then paddled to the bank. Bobby had swallowed water but recovered. Robert was winded. 3637-41887
