Robert M. Harmon, 13, schoolboy, saved Maude Eulass, 81, from being killed by a train, Mason City, Illinois, December 22, 1956. Mrs. Eulass started to walk over a railroad crossing toward the main track on which a train 700 feet away was approaching. The engineer reduced the speed to 35 m.p.h. and sounded a horn. Although warning lights began to flash at the crossing, Mrs. Eulass continued walking toward the track. Robert was near the opposite side of the crossing and decided that Mrs. Eulass, who walked with her head bowed, was unaware of the approaching train. He ran over the uneven crossing and across the track in front of the oncoming train, a total of 28 feet to Mrs. Eulass, who then was 18 inches from the track. The train was within 20 feet of them as Robert reached Mrs. Eulass and pulled her five feet away from the track as the train passed them at a reduced speed of 25 m.p.h. 44056-4109
