Robert Kenneth Melcher saved Enedelia Vasquez from being struck by an automobile, Detroit, Michigan, January 14, 1969. When an automobile jumped the curb and veered toward her as she stood on the sidewalk, Enedelia, 13, was too frightened to move from the vehicle’s path. Robert, 12, schoolboy, who was standing about three feet from Enedelia, noted her plight when the automobile was within five feet of her and approaching at decreasing speed. Instead of jumping clear, Robert lunged toward Enedelia and thrust her from the path of the vehicle. Enedelia was unharmed; but Robert was struck on the thigh by the automobile as it passed. He was knocked to the sidewalk and suffered a head injury. He recovered.
