Robert F. Morel rescued Larry W. Wilson from assault, Charlotte, North Carolina, October 20, 1990. At night, Wilson, 34, police officer, was shot twice by a man he had approached to question. Severely wounded, he lay in the street but managed to shoot his assailant, who also then fell to the street. A passing motorist, Morel, 41, concert production manager, witnessed the shooting. He positioned his car between Wilson and the assailant, who was still conscious and in control of his handgun. Morel approached the assailant and attempted to disarm him, but, despite his wounds, which would be fatal, the assailant resisted before releasing the gun. Morel then tended to Wilson until police and paramedics arrived. Wilson was hospitalized three weeks for treatment of his gunshot wounds, which required two operations.
