Robert F. Buchholz, 27, clay miner, helped to save Reuben A. Brown, 50, mine driver, from a mine cave-in, Brazil, Indiana, December 3, 1923. A cave-in caused a large slab of shale to fall onto another miner, and Brown and three others ran to help lift the slab off the man, when a second fall occurred, another slab of shale pinning Brown to a wall and killing one of the others. Despite bits of shale continuing to fall around them, Buchholz and three others responded. Urged by Brown’s cries for help, Buchholz, aided by two other men, moved the slab and freed Brown. About a ton of material fell in the first two falls, and shale continued to fall in the two days following the rescue. 24632-1901
