Robert E. Tindal saved Sheila E. Gerner from drowning, Holden Beach, North Carolina, August 26, 1987. Mrs. Gerner, 50, on an inflatable raft in the Atlantic Ocean, was pulled out to sea, and when she attempted to return to shore, she was hampered by a strong current. Tindal, 30, painter, who was nearby, learned that Mrs. Gerner needed assistance. He entered the water and swam about 600 feet to her. Despite having to go against a strong current, Tindal swam back to shore, pulling Mrs. Gerner. Both were exhausted, and they recovered.
