Robert E. Lewis, Jr., saved Alice C. Lewis from being killed by a train, Jacksonville, Florida, August 23, 1940. Mrs. Lewis, 29, drove an automobile on a crossing onto a track on which a freight-train was approaching at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Lewis, 26, salesman, drove his automobile to Mrs. Lewis’s, the front bumper of his automobile touching the rear bumper of hers; and his automobile came to a brief stop. The locomotive then was 75 feet from Mrs. Lewis. Five young women then quickly got out of Mrs. Lewis’s automobile and ran from the crossing. Lewis immediately drove his automobile forward as fast as it would go in low gear, pushing Mrs. Lewis’s automobile from the track. The rear of his automobile cleared the rail when the locomotive was 10 feet from it. The train passed at unreduced speed. 38562-3205
