Robert E. Dean died saving Todd A. MacMillan from drowning, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, March 11, 1987. Todd, 9, was on a small surfboard in the Pacific Ocean near the beach when a strong current carried him seaward. Dean, 30, materiels handler, who was nearby on the beach, ran into the water and swam to Todd. Holding onto the surfboard, Dean and Todd kicked toward shore. Dean then gave Todd a push, enabling him to ride a wave to shallow water. Appearing fatigued, Dean submerged and surfaced several times. He was later recovered by rescuers but could not be revived.
