Robert Doyle Needham, 13, schoolboy, saved Lucian G. Sandifer, 13, from drowning, Teague, Texas, September 1, 1917. Lucian, who was unable to swim, jumped into Cash Creek and struggled to a point 10 feet from the bank, where the water was seven feet deep. Robert swam 22 feet to Lucian and got hold of his belt with one hand and his collar with the other. Lucian attempted twice to grasp Robert around the neck, but Robert slipped from his grasp, Robert’s head going under the surface each time. A woman on the bank then extended a branch toward them. Lucian grasped it after Robert, holding Lucian with one hand, had swum three feet, but the branch broke three feet from the end. Robert swam three feet farther with Lucian, who again grasped the branch and was drawn to the bank. 18538-1613
