Robert D. Jones, Jr., saved Frantz W. Rarey and George L. Brown from drowning, Indialantic, Florida, October 28, 1947. While bathing in rough surf in the Atlantic Ocean, Rarey, 44, oil production superiintendent, and Brown, 24, salesman, drifted with a strong undercurrent farther from shore into deep water and called for help. Jones, 20, dairy hand, who had refrained from entering the surf because it was unusually rough, waded 20 feet and swam 440 feet to Rarey and with great effort towed him 420 feet through waves three to four feet high to wadable water and then dragged him to shore. Jones was tired and winded; but after he had rested two minutes and a man had declined to attempt the rescue, Jones, despite pleas of his mother, again waded 20 feet and swam 600 feet to Brown, whom he assisted back to wadable water and helped carry to shore. Rarey and Brown were exhausted and ill. Jones was almost exhausted and suffered from nervousness and nausea. 41219-3555
