Robert C. Johnson helped to rescue Warren E. Dixon, Jr., from burning, Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, February 24, 1978. At night fire broke out in the kitchen of a second-floor, apartment occupied by Dixon, 24. Johnson, 20, college student, started up the stairs to the second floor but choked on the smoke and retreated for air. He then re-entered the stairwell, made his way to the second floor, and entered the living room of the apartment, where heat was intense and smoke was very dense. By probing, Johnson located Dixon on the floor and dragged him to the top of the stairs. Fearing he was about to collapse from the smoke and heat, Johnson started down the stairs and met two other men. They removed Dixon, who was hospitalized for burns he had sustained. 56145-6309
