Richard L. Shelby died attempting to save men from suffocation in a coal mine, Dante, Virginia, April 4, 1978. In a coal mine tunnel, six men were overcome by lack of oxygen. Shelby, 56, mining equipment service representative, entered the tunnel to give aid but, before reaching any of the men, was overcome. Three of the men survived; but Shelby and the others died.
