Richard L. Michaud, Jr., saved Nykia Baldwin from a runaway automobile, Clearwater, Florida, May 23, 1987. Nykia, 4, was a passenger in a car that was involved in a traffic accident. Although the car was stopped, its engine was running, causing the back tires to spin and smoke. All others escaped the car through the driver’s door except Nykia, who remained inside. Suddenly, the car began to move backward in tight, counterclockwise circles, and its speed increased. Stopped in traffic at the scene, Michaud, 24, assistant nightclub manager, ran to the driver’s side of the car, and, as it continued to circle, reached inside and grasped Nykia. Just after he pulled Nykia out, the opened door struck him and knocked him and Nykia down. Michaud recovered from cuts and bruises.
