Richard C. Pool attempted to help rescue Joe Ann D. White from assault, England, Arkansas, February 8, 1988. Mrs. White, 32, was shot twice by an assailant in the factory where she worked. She fell to the floor and, as the assailant stood over and pointed the gun at her, pleaded for him not to shoot her again. Pool, 34, fitting room supervisor, who worked in the same factory, saw the assault from another part of the factory. He immediately ran toward the assailant, arriving as another man tackled him, knocking the gun away. Pool recovered the gun. Arriving police arrested the assailant. Mrs. White was hospitalized for her wounds.
