Reuel J. Jacobson, 16, student, saved E. Finette Leuthold, 17, from drowning, Waseca, Minnesota, November 20, 1916. While Finette and a companion were skating on Clear Lake a quarter-mile from shore, the companion broke through thin ice, and Finette followed him into the hole. The temperature was below zero, and it was dark. Finette’s companion was drowned before help came. Reuel skated to a point 30 feet from the hole. He crawled on his hands and knees close to the hole, and after sticking his skate in the ice, he took hold of Finette’s hand, backed away from the hole, and drew her on the ice. The ice bent under them, and water flowed around them. 18349-1546
