Reuben M. Vizcarra rescued a woman from assault, Arcadia, California, June 19, 1997. A 52-year-old woman was being viciously attacked in her apartment by a man armed with a knife. Her screams for help attracted the attention of Vizcarra, 49, computer marker and grader, who was visiting in an apartment nearby. Vizcarra responded to the scene, where he gained entry to the woman’s apartment. Wielding the knife, the assailant approached Vizcarra. Vizcarra exited the apartment, then re-entered after being handed a lightweight flagpole. Vizcarra struck the assailant’s hand with the pole, knocking the knife to the floor. He then wrestled the assailant to the floor and held him until police arrived within minutes. The woman required hospital treatment for numerous knife wounds and other injuries.
