Raymond Royce McInnis rescued Larry E. Hartgrove from burning, Hamlet, North Carolina, May 27, 1973. In a one-car accident, Hartgrove, 27, trainman, sustained injuries and lost consciousness; and flames broke out at the engine in the rear of the two-door automobile. McInnis, 51, salesman, was among those attracted. Running to the burning vehicle, McInnis opened the door. He reached into the automobile, grasped Hartgrove, and attempted to remove him. Flames on the sedan were spreading into the rear-seat area; and McInnis sustained minor burns as, jerking forcibly on Hartgrove, he succeeded in pulling him out. Hartgrove recovered from his injuries and burns.
