Raymond R. Pfeifer, 12, school-boy, saved Selma A. Vourganas, 32, from drowning, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, August 9, 1947. While bathing in Town Line Lake, Mrs. Vourganas, who was a poor swimmer, got into water 10 feet deep 50 feet from the bank and was submerged briefly. Raymond, who was lighter by 45 pounds, swam 30 feet from wadable water to Mrs. Vourganas, who grasped him around the neck and submerged him. He seized her wrists and forcibly freed himself. Taking hold of Mrs. Vourganas beneath her chin, he towed her with difficulty to wadable water and aided her to the bank. Raymond was tired and winded, and Mrs. Vourganas was weak. Both recovered.
