Raymond J. Moore, 17, millhand, saved W. Henry McCoy, 10, from drowning, Gleasondale, Massachusetts, January 13, 1919. Henry broke through thin ice while skating on Gleasondale Mill Pond, where the water was 10 feet deep. He went under the surface twice and rose struggling. He tried to climb upon the ice, but it broke under him, forming a hole four feet square. Moore ran to a point five feet from the hole and crawled on his stomach to the edge of the hole. He grasped Henry and drew him halfway out of the water, but the ice broke under Moore, and he went into the water. He retained his hold on Henry, who flung his arms wildly in his fright and struck Moore several times in the face. A boy then pushed a board over the ice to the edge of the hole, and Moore climbed upon the board and drew Henry out. 19404-1648
