Raymond A. May, 23, locomotive fireman, saved James L. Douglas, 2, from being run over by a train, Pates, Kentucky, September 8, 1908. While his train was running 30 m.p.h., May noticed the child on the track. The brakes having been applied, he went from the cab to the pilot, where he braced himself in a kneeling position on the footrail. Reaching forward with both hands, he lifted the babe from the ground and threw him to the side of the track. 2978-221
