Rayfield R. Hossack died attempting to save Margaret E. Hauck from drowning, Cedarville, Michigan, August 31, 1924. Miss Hauck, 34, and a girl, who was a good swimmer, were thrown into deep water in Les Cheneaux Channel of Lake Huron when the canoe in which they were riding was struck by a motorboat. Her companion swam to the boat, but Miss Hauck struggled and went under the surface. It was very dark. Fully clothed, Hossack, 21, deliveryman, dived from the boat and rose with Miss Hauck. The boat kept moving farther from them, and before a young man who was inexperienced in handling it could take the boat near them, Hossack and Miss Hauck sank and were drowned. 24623-2154
