Ralph Mills Harned died attempting to save M. Betsey Duff and Raquel Rodriguez from drowning, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, September 14, 1931. Soon after the boat swamped, Harned, 19, student, reached Miss Duff, 18, and at his suggestion she took hold of his shoulders. He started to swim toward the bank, and Miss Rodriguez, 19, appealed to him to save her. Soon the three were together, and Miss Rodriguez took hold of Miss Duff. All were submerged. Miss Rodriguez rose separated from the others and was rescued by Kelly. Miss Duff and Harned rose, and as they bobbed up and down, Kelly reached them and took Miss Duff, but Harned sank and was drowned. (See case of M. HUGH KELLY.) 31619-2655
