Ralph E. Maxey, 29, baggage master, saved Harriett E. Malcolm, 62, and Lottie Hollenberg, 49, from being run over by a train, Monmouth, Illinois, May 12, 1908. The women were walking on a crossing toward a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 10 to 15 m.p.h., and when they were about to step over the rail, the locomotive was within 70 feet of them. Maxey sprang onto the track from the opposite side and pushed or pulled them away from it, clearing it himself but a moment before the train passed at undiminished speed. None was injured. 6543-729
