Ralph C. Harris sustained fatal injuries rescuing G. Leitch Robertson and five others from a runaway, Rowland, North Carolina, May 6, 1922. Robertson, 18, and the others were riding in a loaded wagon drawn by two mules, which became frightened. When the mules were galloping at a speed of 25 m.p.h., Harris, 44, veterinarian, ran to them and caught hold of a line near the bit. He ran at the side of the mule and pulled back, and the speed of the mules was checked somewhat, but Harris stumbled and fell, and a wheel of the wagon ran over him. He died a few minutes later as a result of his injuries. The mules ran 90 feet farther and stopped. 23760-2162
