R. Frank Guglierio rescued Edith Gardner from a fatal fall, Brooklyn, New York, July 23, 1952. Edith, 4, slipped from a fourth-floor window of an apartment building and briefly clung to the window sill 35 feet above the pavement, attracting Guglierio, 36, construction worker. He ran 150 feet to a point beneath Edith and held out his arms. She dropped horizontally, striking Guglierio’s arms and chest. As Guglierio pivoted to avoid falling down a nearby basement stairway, Edith’s knees came in contact with his forehead, and he was stunned by the impact and toppled backward to the pavement holding her. A man caught Guglierio and partly checked his fall. Guglierio sustained a head injury, and Edith suffered minor bruises. Both recovered. 42621-3809
