Powell T. Lindgren saved Edith B. Taylor from drowning, Asbury Park, New Jersey, May 29, 1920. Miss Taylor, 33, was carried by a strong current into deep water in the Atlantic Ocean. The water was very cold, and the waves were six feet high. She attempted to swim against the current but was carried to a point 200 feet from shore. Powell, 17, student, swam 170 feet to Miss Taylor and tried to swim toward shore with her, but the current carried them farther out. Powell then drifted and swam about 200 feet to a point close to the outer end of a pier. The water was rough, and there was danger that both would be hurled against the piles of the pier. A ring life preserver attached to a rope was then thrown to them, and holding to it, Miss Taylor and Powell were cautiously drawn along the side of the pier to wadable water. Miss Taylor collapsed from exhaustion. 20452-1718
