Platt D. Andrews died attempting to save Annie B. Phipps from drowning, Independence, Virginia, July 26, 1931. While Mrs. Phipps, 23, was swimming in the New River, she got into distress in deep water 50 feet from the bank. Andrews, 38, store manager, who was following her, swam a stroke or two to her, grasped her hand, and tried to swim against the current toward wadable water but made no progress. Mrs. Phipps became frantic and seized Andrews. After being submerged momentarily once or twice, they rose separated, only the top of Andrews’s head appearing at the surface. He soon sank and was drowned. Mrs. Phipps threshed and drifted a few feet to a point where she could get her head above water by jumping and then was rescued by a man who arrived in a boat. 32175-2652
