Pierce D. Marsh, 31, locomotive engineer, prevented a train from being wrecked and saved the passengers and crew, Jane Lew, West Virginia, June 25, 1907. As his train was climbing a heavy grade, Marsh saw a string of runaway cars approaching at a speed of 45 m.p.h. He stopped and reversed his engine, then had run his train 2,250 feet downgrade at a speed of 50 m.p.h. when the cars overtook it.
