Philip S. Lund died attempting to save Mineva M. Stalnaker and Marie G. Vietor from drowning, Cedar Falls, Iowa, May 22, 1921. Miss Stalnaker, 21, and Miss Vietor, 19, fell from a canoe into deep water in the Cedar River and were carried by the current toward a dam. Lund, 19, boathouse helper, reached them in a rowboat 15 feet from the crest of the dam, and both girls grasped the boat. Lund was unable to make progress against the current, and all were swept over the dam. Lund and Miss Vietor were drowned. Miss Stalnaker came to the surface 50 feet from the dam, held to an oar of the boat, and swam to wadable water. 21429-1723
