Philip Farrington Gray, 19, student, died attempting to save an indeterminate person or persons from drowning, Northfield, Minnesota, June 3, 1926. While two young women and two young men were canoeing on the George Huntington Lyman Memorial Lakes, their canoe turned over, and all were thrown into deep water 100 feet from the bank. It was night, and they could not be seen from the bank. Gray, who was not feeling well, was on the bank with a girl companion. They heard calls for help, and Gray, fully clothed, entered the water and swam toward the distressed as his companion went for help. One of the men swam to an island, and one of the women clung to the overturned canoe for a time but finally drowned. The other two were rescued. Gray’s body was later found on the bottom about 40 feet from the bank. 26486-2317
